Classmates

60 years have gone by since we graduated from high school
so you can bet we don't look the same as we did back in the 60's...
Some of us have more pounds, or less hair, and some...
actually look better than they did at USC.
This page will remind everyone of what we looked like back then and the way we look now, as well as update us on what we are doing in this stage of our lives.

Comment: Well, let's see. Graduated with youinz in June '65 and entered Beast Barracks at West Point in July '65. Made it through (didn't think so, did ya?) and went to Germany, Vietnam, Georgia (3 times), Texas and ended up in Virginia as an Infantry Officer. Somewhere in there I got my Masters in Environmental Engineering and worked for the Corps of Engineers until 1985. My first insane decision: Left the Army. Went to IBM to manage a water and wastewater program, then Environmental Remedial Construction contracting. In grad school at Johns Hopkins they said you need to be a Water and Wastewater Superintendent. So, my second insane decision: I went to the City of Manassas as their Supe in August of 2000. But, what they don't teach you in Grad School is that you have to love supervising a weird mix of people and laying on discipline almost daily. (Don Stoicovy??) I didn't love it so I quit last December and I'm back to just Environmental Engineering with SCS Engineers in Winchester, VA. Along that journey I married, have two beautiful daughters, a great son-in-law, an 8-yr old grandson and a 4 yr-old granddaughter (living in Pgh). My oldest, Nicole, is 37 and my youngest, Jamie, just graduated from UNC Charlotte. I am also very close to and proud of my sister, Linda's (USC '66) two boys, Brad and Brian (of Cleveland) who, like their Unca Jim, are Eagle Scouts, and who, like their Unca Jim, are in the Army. At least the reserves. But Brian has been to Bosnia and is in Iraq as we speak. ("Say a little prayer for him") Also along the way I separated, divorced and I'm starting all over again: wedding is June 10th! My passion: I guess to live quietly in the woods of the Shenandoah Valley with my dog and my honey, and help others out wherever and whenever I can. |

Comment: My life since graduation has been several 'books'. In the interest of space ~ here is the short of it. Went to Point Park for 1 year. Got a job. Got several jobs. Got married. Got a job. Got several jobs. Got divorced. Got a job. Got several jobs. Worked at a few more jobs for 10 more years. Moved out west with my 'significant other' and lived in AZ, UT and ended up in ID. (Oh-got married again in AZ) Had my son in AZ and my daughter in ID 18 months later. Had a horse ranch in ID for 10years. Separated. Got a job. Got several jobs, moved to town, went to Idaho State Univ., got divorced again, got my LPN and moved back to the Burgh. Got tired of HMOs and went to Carlow to learn computers and now I work at Pitt in the Epidemiology Data Center using my nursing background in research. Whew, and that was just the 'short' of it! Seems that it's been a 'long, strange trip' for many of us! See you all in August ~ |

2015 Entry... The reunion is a month away so I felt it right to let you know I will not be able to be there as much as it would be very enjoyable to see everyone. If you Google Stevens County Washington right now you will see that more than 15,000 acres have burned since this past weekend and it is hot, dry, and windy right now. I feel it would not be right for me to leave with no relief to our "fire weather" in sight. Also, since some of my boys are involved in fighting the fires locally, they will in all likelihood be busy if something comes our way and with my mother-in-law and sister-in-law counting on me, it seems best to stay close to home. This has been the worst fire season we have seen in our 24 years here. The boys managed to help save several homes over the weekend and that is a good feeling but there have been others less fortunate. Please let everyone know that I am thinking of them ... Have a Great Reunion ! I look forward to the photos afterwards. 2006 Entry... Graduated from Penn State 1969; Marine Corps 1969-73; switched to using my first name in 1972 and have been Charlie ever since; Masters in Forestry from Virginia Tech 1977; married Betsy in 1977; moved to Oregon 1979 and managed a reforestation company; worked on a ph.d in Forest hydrology 1981 to 1989 at University of Idaho, taught there 3 years; had our first child in 1983 and now have 5 boys and 1 girl ranging from 22 to 11; moved to Seattle in 1989 and then to eastern Washington in 1991; ordained a minister in the Mennonite Church in 1998; started a family woodworking business in 2003 and we make bedroom and custom furniture and have a folding cedar Adirondack furniture line. Life is busy but very good. I will not be able to be at the reunion, but enjoy reading about you all. |

Bev and I left PA about 38 years ago and headed for Aurora CO where we lived and raised our two children until they graduated from H.S. Shane, our son, is a M.D. in Highlands Ranch CO. Kari graduated from Drake University, in Journalism and is currently residing in Minneapolis, MN with her husband Ryan. We have our own home inspection business, scuba dive and take the horses and dogs to the mountains and surrounding states to ride and camp every summer for the last 12 years. We have seen some beautiful country on our horses and plan to ride off into the sunset towards our retirement... We have ridden in Arizona, (Monument Valley and Canyon Des Chelly), North and South Dakota in the Badlands, Fort Robinson and The Flying B Ranch in Nebraska, Hole in the Wall and Yellowstone in Wyoming, Pole Canyon and Palo Duro Canyon in Texas, New Mexico, Robbers Cave in Oklahoma, Kannapolis Kansas, and as far as The Flying R in Missouri. After trying to be a nurse for 18 years, I ended up with my first love - paper. I've worked for the last 18 years for personal injury lawyers, doing a variety of medically related things and sort of overseeing the computer system. I have a great husband and two grown sons who turned out fine. I love movies, playing scrabble, and computer stuff. Once in a while I read a book, but I'm pretty illiterate. I consider myself a very fortunate person. |

Comment: After college, we moved to Seattle (Doug's hometown) and lived there until we moved to Florida in 1984. We have three kids - Jeff, Kristen, and Brian. Brian is the only one married - he and Christy live in Gainesville, FL where she is finishing her degree in design and he is with Nationwide Insurance. Jeff and Kristen live near us, as do both of my sisters and my mom. Jeff works with Doug, and Kristen works at the local college. We celebrated our 40th anniversary this year. It doesn't seem that long... Doug is still in the lighting and appliance business. I have worked at various stores and a bank and in June of 2005, my dream became a reality. We opened a boutique called Kate's- Retail Therapy for Girly Girls. It's been an interesting adventure and we've learned a lot! Doug usually introduces himself as the M&M man around the shop. That's maintenance and money. We have an adorable Bichon Frise as the shop dog and official greeter. DJ, the dog, thinks the ladies just come to visit with him. Some days, I think he's right ! |

I can see that you've all taken a much more mature, serious approach to the entries on this website than I originally did. So I'll try to conform. I've now been happily married to Kathy, who I met at PSU, for 34 years. We have two beautiful and accomplished daughters, ages 22 and 14. Career wise, I've worked for a number of well known corporations of some notoriety, including TYCO, Adelphia, Arthur Anderson, Worldcom, Ahold, and Enron. In addition to the many creative business practices I picked up along the way, I also earned an MBA a few years back. I still try to keep in touch with my former colleagues, but based on where many of them are living now, it's not all that easy. It's been much easier to keep in touch with my many acquaintances at the SEC. Presently I'm working on a new venture. As it turns out, Mary, my youngest, is quite an athlete. I've been very busy coaching her regionally-ranked, travel soccer team for the past eight years. This involvement in youth soccer has evolved into my new business, that as the exclusive distributor to the under-20 youth market for BALCO, a San Francisco based manufacturer of performance enhancing drugs and nutritional supplements for athletes. BALCO has a definite presence in the professional baseball and track markets, but the youth market is virtually unexploited. Having observed first hand the unquenchable desire many parents have to win at all costs, I believe that there is a big potential in getting these kids "on the juice". It should be a real breakthrough opportunity. |
