James (Jim) Harry Johnston

1947-04-02 2025-06-17

James Harry Johnston, son of Frederick Johnston (Belfast, N. Ireland) and Virginia Massey Pifer (Berryville, VA) passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of service, love, and quiet strength. Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara G. Brooks; his loving sister, Linda A. White; and his cherished daughters, Nicole J. Schutt (Scott) and Jamie J. McKinney (Jay). Affectionately known as “Grumpa,” Jim was a treasured grandfather to Zachary, Taylor, Carter, Riley, and Mason, who brought him boundless joy and pride.

Born in 1947 in Baltimore, Maryland, Jim lived a life defined by duty, compassion, and integrity. An Eagle Scout from Troop 215 in Bethel Park, PA, he embodied the Scout values throughout his life. Jim graduated from Upper St. Clair High School in 1965 before entering the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned his Engineering degree in 1969. He proudly served his country as an Infantry officer during the Vietnam War (7th Cavalry) and was a recipient of the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat. Jim's commitment to honor and service never waned.

Following his military service, Jim pursued his passion for environmental stewardship, earning a master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. He applied this knowledge through his work at IBM, the City of Manassas, and SCS Engineers, always with a mind toward improving communities and protecting the environment.

In his later years, Jim devoted himself to service within the Alcoholics Anonymous community, where he spent the last nine years helping others find hope and healing. He was a steady and compassionate presence to many. Jim also enjoyed simpler pleasures—working as an usher for the Kannapolis Intimidators, cheering on the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Steelers, baking bread, and watching the birds at his feeders off the front porch with quiet delight.

Jim is now reunited with dear family and friends who went before him, as well as his loyal dogs, Peate and Luca, who surely met him at the bridge. Jim Johnston’s life was a testament to resilience, service, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
